Corporate Giving

At Ferro, corporate giving and global employee volunteerism are key components of our Social Responsibility.  In line with our Win from Within principles, extending our time, monetary gifts and resources to our local communities creates winning opportunities for the organizations and people to which we give, and winning attitudes amongst our employees.

United Way

Ferro is proud to be one of the more than 170 Pacesetter organizations in United Way of Greater Cleveland’s annual fund raising campaign.  As a “pacesetter,” we hold our internal fundraising effort before the area’s community-wide campaign to help jumpstart giving in the broader campaign.

We are committed to supporting United Way and consider our sponsorship an important part of our corporate citizenship in Greater Cleveland, which has been Ferro’s home base since 1919.

We believe that by investing in United Way locally – through our financial support and employee volunteerism – we are helping those in need and promoting self-sufficiency in children, youth, adults, and senior citizens.

Ferro believes that generosity and civic involvement are behaviors of a winning organization and that winning companies have an obligation to care for the communities in which they operate.

United Way of Greater Cleveland is a family of more than 130 partner agencies that help Greater Clevelanders with their most pressing health and human care needs.

Charles W. Eliot School

In 1989, Ferro entered into a partnership with Charles W. Eliot, now a K-8 school in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, to lend hands-on employee volunteerism in programs that would boost student interest in science.

Amy Riordan, Corporate HR Specialist, works with a  Charles Eliot student on Junior Achievement Day.

Over the years, this relationship has grown into a thriving, award-winning business/school partnership.

A combination of annual funding and Ferro employee volunteerism has allowed the school to:

  • Have ongoing science and laboratory curricula and science fairs;
  • Host nationally recognized authors as speakers and enhance literary and arts learning;
  • Maintain a well-used computer lab;
  • Take children on chaperoned cultural field trips;
  • Hold motivational student and faculty recognition events; and
  • Update the school’s physical plant, creating an engaging, safe learning environment for students and pleasant teaching surroundings for faculty.

The BEST news is that this partnership is leading to improvement in academic achievement scores!

Ferro is very proud to support the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and the children and families of Charles Eliot.  We encourage other Cleveland-area businesses to participate in business/school partnerships as a means toward strengthening our community.  You can learn more about forming a partnership by contacting the
City Year Cleveland Business/School Partnership Program.

Great Lakes Science Center

Ferro Corporation and our Electronic Material Systems Group are among the sponsors of the Great Lakes Science Center’s 2007 construction of a 300-foot solar panel canopy at the museum’s entrance and the associated "SolarWorks" exhibits.  The solar panel array, combined with a wind turbine, provide an immediate and exciting renewable energy experience to those visiting the Great Lakes Science Center.  Both are part of the Science Center’s advanced energy initiative, which aims to raise community and civic awareness regarding renewable energy.  Ferro’s contribution to SolarWorks also includes guidance from Ferro Electronic Material Systems scientists in the development of solar energy education exhibits at the museum.

Local Cleveland children gather to show off their "Ferro Materials Make Solar Work" t-shirts, which were provided by Ferro at the  the SolarWorks dedication ceremony in July 2007.

Ferro Electronic Material Systems creates materials for solar panels and is a leading supplier to solar panel manufacturers worldwide.  Ferro is delighted to be part of this local initiative, in our corporate headquarters city, and to doing our part to share our technology and expertise to educate the public about the benefits of solar energy and further engage Greater Clevelanders in the understanding of the important interrelationship between science, technology and the environment.
