EDISON, NJ—A new black liquid colorant for injection molding exhibits greater hiding power, jetness, and stability than previous formulations according to Thomas Loschiavo, national sales manager, here.
The new colorant, # 91-88380, incorporates "very jet" carbon black pigment into Ferro's universal liquid vehicle at 35 percent loadings using proprietary processing techniques. Pigment agglomerates are broken down into individual particles and wet-out in suspension, preventing reagglomeration and increasing the opacity of the original pigment by 50 to 80 percent.
The process is also said to improve anti-settling characteristics and minimize viscosity. At 5000 centipoise the new black is pourable and pumpable, and disperses readily into both solid and melted resins for uniform color distribution at recommended letdowns of 100:1 to 1000:1.
The colorant is reportedly compatible with PVC, ABS, styrenics, polyolefins, and other thermoplastics, and is incorporated through the feed throat of injection molding machines using a peristaltic metering pump, also available from the Company.
