European Santicizer® 160

Plasticizer Product Profile

Product Description
Chemical Type : Butyl Benzyl Phthalate

Santicizer® 160 Plasticizer is a highly efficient primary plasticizer that offers formulators and manufacturers unusually good processing features (fast fusion, higher filler loadings, better foam expansion) and imparts excellent "end-use" properties such as migration and extraction resistance, foam resilience, stain resistance and abrasion resistance.

1. Vinyl polymers
Santicizer® 160 imparts outstanding processing ease to vinyl stock in calendering, plastisols and moulding production methods. It imparts stain resistance, solvent extraction resistance, abrasion resistance, filler-wettability, improved tear strength and excellent compatibility with vinyls.

These properties make it an excellent choice for profile extrusions, slush moulding, film and sheeting, coated fabrics, floor and wall coverings, vinyl foams and plastisols for car sealants.

2. Floor coverings
Santicizer® 160 has found a major application in the plasticization of vinyl floor coverings because of its many versatile features: rapid fusion, high filler tolerance, migration resistance to asphalt adhesives, abrasion and stain resistance. The use of Santicizer® 160 helps manufacturers to achieve optimum performance in homogeneous, solid vinyl tiles and vinyl coated floorings. It also distinctly improves the recovery of foamed materials.

3. Adhesives
Santicizer® 160 is an outstanding plasticizer for polyvinyl acetate adhesives and other applications. In quick-tack, hot melts, wood glues and other adhesives, Santicizer® 160 gives added bonding strength to many hard-to-adhere substrates. Through the proper use of plasticizer, the formulator has a large area of flexibility in which to meet different adhesion needs.

Santicizer® 160 offers these adhesives flexibility through extraction resistance, water resistance, low melt point and good flow properties.

4. Nitrile Rubber
Santicizer® 160 offers nitrile rubber good oil extraction resistance and higher permanency to the vulcanizate than traditionally used Dibutyl Phthalate.

5. Acrylic Coatings
Santicizer® 160 offers an external plasticizing of acrylic lacquers with improved physical properties over internally plasticized or copolymer method.

6. Polysulfide Sealant
Santicizer® 160 can be used as a plasticizer for polysulfide sealants, to which it will impart good extraction resistance performance. For more severe applications in which lower plasticizer volatility and improved extraction resistance are required, Santicizer® 261, an Alkyl Benzyl Phthalate, would be our recommendation.

In extreme cases, for instance glass insulation sealant, Santicizer® 278 is our optimum recommendation since, due to its very low vapour pressure, it will eliminate the possibility of mist formation.

7. Food Contact Approval
Specific FDA references to the regulated applications appear in the following sections of Title 21 of the code of Federal Regulations:
175.105 - Adhesives;
175.300 - Resinous and Polymeric Coatings;
176.170 - Components of Paper & Paperboard in Contact with Fatty or Aqueous Food;
175.180 - Components of Paper & Paperboard in Contact with Dry Food;
177.2420 - Cross-linked Polyester Resins (as solvent);
178.3740 - Polymeric Substances (Extraction limitations).
In Europe, its use in contact with food is also regulated in Belgium, France, Germany Holland and the U.K.*
Butyl Benzyl Phthalate also appears in the EC draft list of additives for plastic materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs.
