North American Santicizer® 2148

Plasticizer Product Profile

Product Description
Santicizer® 2148 Plasticizer is a low-smoke, flame-retardant Alkyl Aryl Phosphate Ester plasticizer with very low volatility, excellent low-temperature performance and good softening efficiency. This combination of properties is unique for a flame-retardant plasticizer; volatility and low-temperature characteristics are considerably improved over Santicizer® 141 or Santicizer® 148. Extensive testing indicates that, when substituted for Phthalate Plasticizers in PVC, Santicizer® 2148 imparts large reductions in smoke and significant improvement in flame spread. These enhancements can be realized in systems already benefiting from high levels of other FR agents and smoke suppressants such as Antimony Oxide, ATH and Molybdenum. In most cases, the substitution of Santicizer® 2148 in place of non-phosphate plasticizers allows for the reduction in the use of other flame and smoke- retardant additives.

This outstanding combination of plasticizing performance and FR characteristics makes Santicizer® 2148 an excellent flame-retardant plasticizer for wire insulation and cable jacket compounds. Ranking Santicizer® 2148 against well-known wire and cable plasticizers shows that it heat ages better than 711 Phthalate or DIDP-EG and approaches the performance of DUP. By itself, Santicizer® 2148 can pass the heat aging requirements for 75 degree cable jacket; reinforced with minimal amounts of Trimellitate or Polymeric Plasticizer, 105 degree ratings are possible. The low-temperature performance of Santicizer® 2148 is very close to that of 711 Phthalate, an industry standard.

In plastisols, Santicizer® 2148 provides low viscosity, good viscosity stability and excellent high shear rheology, all very unusual for Phosphate Esters. These factors, in combination with its low volatility and resistance to extraction and migration, make Santicizer® 2148 a natural choice for reducing viscosity in high solids coatings and sealants. Its unusual combination of low per se viscosity and very low volatility also give Santicizer® 2148 use for solvent reduction/replacement in systems needing lower VOCs.
