Ferro metallic colors give attractive effects on both light and dark glazes, and are especially recommended for the decoration of tiles.

Miscibility

Metallic colors of the same shade may be mixed in order to achieve optimal melting behaviour under individual processing conditions. In this way, higher and lower melting preparations may be mixed to achieve a middle melting point, but only within the same shade range.
Different colors shades should not be mixed.

Interference colors

Interference colors applied on dark glazes (cobalt blue or black) achieve an  intense gbright and glossy tone.

On light glazes, interference colors give the impression of a transparent matt coating that shimmers green, blue, red or golden when viewed at different angles.

Application

Ferro’s metallic and interference colors have been developed and tested for the following application methods:

• direct screen-printing
• hand-painting
• spray-gun.

Direct screen-printing

Large meshed screens should be used, as the pigments are flat in shape.
We recommend polyester screen cloth: 40-77 threads/cm2 (100-195 mesh/inch) for metallic colors; 73-77 threads/cm2 (185-195 mesh/inch) for interference colors.

Metallic and interference colors are voluminous and therefore more medium is required than with normal decorating colors. We recommend 80683 medium and the following mixing ratios.

Please note:
in order to avoid pigment breakdown, color pastes and color suspensions should not be processed in a ball mill.

Resistance
Lead-release tests of metallic and interference colors according to DIN 51031 on porcelain fired at 820° C show a value below 1.1 mg Pb/dm2 .
Colors are cadmium-free.
After testing with 3% hydrochloric acid for 24 hours, metallic and interference colors are slightly matted.
However, there is no alteration in color tone. Resistance to abrasion on smooth surfaces is comparable to that of regular decorating colors.

Miscibility

Different color shades should not be mixed. When printing interference colors as a second color layer on top of dark decorating colors, the effect is the same as on dark glazes. However it is necessary to use a higher firing decorating color in order to prevent the interference color from sinking in.
